Spoken summary — read to open the discussion

This week’s lecture opens with a volcano. Sometime between 1612 and 1600 BCE, Thera erupted with a force that buried a whole town under ash and sent tsunamis along the Aegean coastline — and pinning down even that date took a small library of disagreeing evidence: an olive branch killed by the ash itself, sitting inside an unusually flat stretch of the radiocarbon calibration curve; a polar ice layer once blamed on Thera and now reattributed to a volcano in Alaska; an Egyptian pottery synchronism that has itself just been redated. The lecture uses that opening puzzle to make a point that runs through everything after it: even the driest-seeming ancient date is a negotiated conclusion, not a given fact.

From there the lecture turns to Crete, and makes the case that Minoan civilization enters this world late, not early. Uruk had been running trading colonies and inventing writing to track them for a millennium and a half before the first Cretan palace appears, and Mari’s own archives record tin shipped to a place called Kaptara — Crete — joining a system that was already old.

At Knossos, Evans uncovered more than architecture — a whole civilization, which he named after a Greek myth before a single tablet had been read, and rebuilt in painted concrete with a confidence the evidence rarely supports. Linear A, the palace’s own script, can be sounded out but still cannot be read. The bull-leaping fresco and the so-called “Priest-King” — Minoan art’s two most famous images — are substantially the invention of Evans’s restorers, built up from a handful of genuine fragments. And the peaceful, sea-trading “Pax Minoica” those images seem to support does not survive contact with Gournia’s fortifications, with bronze swords built for killing, or with the labour system Linear B lays bare a generation later.

By the time Mycenaean Greeks take Crete over, ancient DNA suggests absorption more than conquest — a mainland elite that shared most of its ancestry with the island it inherited. And nowhere is the palace machine clearer than at Pylos, where twelve hundred tablets, meant to last a single working year, survive only because the palace burned around them.

The two tasks pick this argument up from opposite ends — the volcano at the very start of the story, the archive at its very end. Hold on to one question throughout: what does each kind of evidence let us know, and what does it conceal?

Setting up the two tasks

Each task pairs an object or primary source with a scholarly argument, and each was signalled in the lecture. The notes here draw the link between the framing and the work the groups will do.

Task ADating a volcano — the Thera eruption and the limits of “absolute” dates

The lecture opens on this exact problem before Crete ever appears. For most of the twentieth century the Thera eruption was dated to around 1500 BCE, fixed by Aegean-style pottery turning up in early Egyptian contexts. That anchor has come loose: a 2025 radiocarbon redating of Egyptian museum objects moves the accession of Ahmose I later, weakening the link, while a volcanic sulfate layer in the polar ice once blamed on Thera has been chemically reattributed to a different eruption, Aniakchak II, in Alaska. Meanwhile the most direct evidence — an olive branch killed by the ash itself — sits inside an unusually flat stretch of the radiocarbon calibration curve, where dates decades apart can look identical; only tsunami deposits on the Anatolian coast, independently radiocarbon-dated, rule out anything earlier than 1612 BCE. The task asks groups to hold several imperfect, independent methods together rather than trust any single “fixed point.” The point to draw out: the lecture uses this same combination — tree rings, radiocarbon, and Bayesian statistical modelling — to redate the Uluburun shipwreck as well, so the argument about how ancient chronology actually gets built runs across the whole unit, even though Uluburun’s own task now sits in the geography discussion.

Task BA palace economy in one year — the Linear B archive at Pylos

Where Task A worked through how a single date gets fixed, this one works through how a single year’s administration gets read from an accidental archive. It turns on the Linear B tablets from the Palace of Nestor at Pylos — the richest single archive of the Mycenaean world, and, by a cruel accident, a complete one: the tablets were unbaked working notes for the current year only, never meant to be kept, and they survive solely because the fire that destroyed the palace around 1200 BCE baked them hard. We hold one year — the last — out of centuries. From that single year the groups can reconstruct an astonishing amount: a kingdom of some 2,000 square kilometres split into two provinces, “this-side-of” and “beyond” Mount Aigaleon; sixteen district centres; raw material issued to specialists under the ta-ra-si-ja system and tracked back rather than stockpiled; a wanax and a lawagetas below him; flocks, smiths, and gangs of dependent women counted out by ration. Set a festival tablet (PY Un 718 — barley, wine, oxen, and pigs gathered for a feast to Poseidon, in an exact 9:6:2:1 ratio of contributions) beside the 2,854 drinking cups from a single palace pantry, and the redistributive economy becomes visible at the moment of consumption: not a market but a banquet, the calculated generosity by which a ruler bound his elite to the centre. A land register (tablet Er 312) sets the wanax’s own royal estate at thirty units of seed grain — smaller than the holding of a private landowner named Enkhelawon, who is never called wanax but appears beside the gods as a recipient of temple offerings. The questions to press: what can quantified written records show that no excavation can — and what does the ambiguity around Enkhelawon reveal about the limits of what Linear B lets us know about power, as against what it lets us count? The forward link is the dark that follows: when the palaces fell, writing itself was lost, and Greece would not write again for four centuries.
