From Accounting Token to Alphabet — Writing Technology and the Transformation of Greek Culture

How a Mesopotamian accountancy tool became the medium for Homer, Thucydides, Socrates, and the laws of the polis. The arc from proto-cuneiform pictogram to Athenian ostrakon spans three thousand years. The Greek alphabet is the hinge point — not because it invents literacy but because it makes literacy accessible enough to become a civic technology.

Prologue — Steep Wilusa c. 1250 – 1180 BCE
Why we start here, out of order

The first great story preserved in Greek is about the Trojan War. The Iliad does not narrate the fall of Troy — it covers a few weeks in the final year of a long siege and ends with a funeral, not a sacking. Eratosthenes of Cyrene, who also calculated the circumference of the earth with startling accuracy, dated the fall of Troy to 1184/3 BCE; other ancient chronographers spread their guesses across nearly three centuries. Eratosthenes’ figure falls neatly within the Bronze Age collapse, and archaeology cooperates: at Hisarlik in north-western Anatolia, the settlement identified as Troy, a phase called Troy VIIa, was destroyed by fire in the late thirteenth or early twelfth century BCE.

We open here, out of chronological sequence, because the Hittite royal archive at Hattusa lets us hear this world in its own words centuries before any Greek could write a line of it down. The kings of Hatti knew Troy by another name — Wilusa — and knew a power across the Aegean they called Ahhiyawa: the Achaeans, or perhaps a shifting constellation of Mycenaean powers. This is not a detour from the history of writing. It is the reason the question matters: a war remembered for four illiterate centuries, then set down at last in an alphabet that had not existed when the war (if there was one war) was fought.

The Tawagalawa Letter — “we have made peace”
Only the last of an original three-tablet letter survives, written in Hittite — probably by Hattusili III (c. 1267–1237 BCE) — to a king of Ahhiyawa. The Hittite king proposes the very words his Ahhiyawan “brother” should send back: “The king of Hatti has satisfied me concerning the matter of the land of Wilusa, over which he and I were formerly enemies; now we have made peace.” This is the only surviving Hittite statement that Hatti and Ahhiyawa had ever been in dispute over Wilusa — and it states the matter as already closed.

Piyamaradu — outlaw, or a man seeking a kingdom?
The letter’s real subject is not Wilusa but a western Anatolian war leader, Piyamaradu. The Hittite king calls him an agitator; he commanded followers, intervened in several western kingdoms, married his daughter to Atpa, ruler of Millawanda (Miletus, under Ahhiyawan authority), and operated repeatedly from Ahhiyawan-protected territory. When cornered, he refused Hittite terms: “Did I not send my son, the crown prince, to meet him? I told him: ‘Go, swear an oath to him, take him by the hand, and bring him before me.’” Piyamaradu slipped away by ship regardless. The vocabulary is that of an outlaw; the outline is already that of a king in waiting.

Manapa-Tarhunta’s sickbed letter — Lazpa and the defecting weavers
Writing to his imperial master while seriously ill, the Hittite vassal Manapa-Tarhunta describes Piyamaradu’s attack on Lazpa (Lesbos): “When Piyamaradu humiliated me, he set Atpa over me. Then he attacked Lazpa.” A body of specialist textile workers — dyers or fullers, belonging partly to Manapa-Tarhunta and partly to the Hittite king — defected across the sea to Atpa. To a modern reader this looks incidental beside armies and sieges; to a Bronze Age palace, the loss of skilled dependants was a serious political and economic injury.

A queen prays for his capture — and he is never caught
A votive text, probably composed for Queen Puduhepa, promises a divine power gold if it will deliver Piyamaradu: “If you seize Piyamaradu alone … [I will give] a bird of gold and a symbol of time in gold.” Armies pursued him, envoys negotiated with him, kings wrote letters about him — and still he is never caught in the surviving archive. A later, badly damaged tablet, the Milawata Letter, mentions him once more in a broken passage, by which time Millawanda had passed out of Ahhiyawan control and the Hittite king was restoring an exiled ruler, Walmu, to the throne of Wilusa itself — raising the possibility that Piyamaradu had briefly ruled Troy during the height of Achaean power in the region.

The Treaty of Kadesh — how Great Kings actually talked to each other
Hattusili III’s demands on Ahhiyawa belong to a wider diplomatic language. In 1259 BCE he concluded with Ramesses II of Egypt the agreement conventionally called the Treaty of Kadesh: “peace and brotherhood” between equal rulers, a promise not to attack one another’s territory, mutual aid against rebellion, and the return of fugitives, exchanged in Akkadian cuneiform on silver tablets under divine protection. No comparable treaty with Ahhiyawa survives, but the Tawagalawa Letter invokes exactly this logic — a “brother” king should restrain attacks launched from his own sphere and surrender those who disturb the peace. Hattusili may simply have expected of the Ahhiyawan king a degree of control over Piyamaradu that no Mycenaean ruler actually possessed.

Ahhiyawa — a Great King the Hittites treat as an equal
Ahhiyawa is generally identified with a Mycenaean Greek power, or a changing constellation of Mycenaean powers. Exactly who its “Great King” was is unresolved — the wanax of Mycenae is the leading candidate, though Thebes, Pylos, and Rhodes have all been proposed, possibly as one ruler acting on behalf of several contemporary Greek palaces. What is not in doubt is the Hittite king’s own vocabulary: he addresses his Ahhiyawan counterpart as “my brother, a Great King, my peer” — the same register used for Egypt, Babylon, and Assyria.

AhT 6 — a letter from “the Great King, King of Ahhiyawa”
One Hittite-language tablet (AhT 6 = CTH 183 = KUB 26.91) answers an earlier Hittite claim over disputed islands and is preserved as a letter from the Ahhiyawan king himself — almost certainly a Hittite rendering of a message that arrived some other way. We might guess the original was drafted in Linear B; we cannot prove it, and no cuneiform tablet of any kind has ever been found in a Mycenaean palace. Mycenaean rulers could have used professional interpreters and corresponded in Akkadian or Hittite on imported clay while keeping their own copies in Linear B — the same arrangement demonstrably used by the kings of Cyprus (Alashiya), whose letters to Egypt and Ugarit have been traced by clay analysis to Cypriot soil. No such Mycenaean tablet has surfaced. Its possible existence, not its proof, is the point: writing and diplomacy travelled together at this level of Bronze Age society, whatever the local script.

“When they came from steep Wilusa…”
A Hittite festival tablet preserves the opening words of a song in a dialect of Luwian, the language spoken in the Wilusa region: “When they came from steep Wilusa…” The phrase has been compared with Homer’s later formula “steep Ilios,” and popular accounts sometimes call it a lost “Wilusiad.” Caution is essential: the resemblance is semantic, not inherited — the Luwian and Greek words for “steep” are unrelated — and the ritual quotes only an opening line, not a poem. Scholars dispute even whether the place-name must be read as “from Wilusa” at all. It is, at most, one tantalising sign that a place called Wilusa had already become the subject of song before 1200 BCE, performed centuries before any Greek epic was written down.

The missing consonant — why the Iliad is really the “Wiliad”
Greek Ilios once began with a consonant: a w-sound written with the letter digamma, which stood sixth in the early Greek alphabet (between epsilon and zeta — where our own F sits, inherited by way of Etruscan and Latin). Digamma fell out of speech in Ionic, Homer’s dialect, before the poems were fixed in writing, but its ghost remains: Greek hexameter counts syllables by duration in fixed patterns, and those patterns break down wherever Homer writes Ilios. Restore the lost digamma — read Wilios, the Greek form of Wilusa — and the metrical trouble disappears. The poems were composed and performed for generations using a word that began with a consonant later generations of Greeks could no longer pronounce or hear.

The beer-ration tablet — the first writing is a ledger accounting
The oldest writing in the world is not poetry, myth, or history. It is a record of grain and beer allocations for workers at the city of Uruk. The sign for beer is a picture of a vessel. The sign for bread is a picture of a loaf. The sign for a worker is a pictogram of a head. Pictograms are intuitive because they replicate a near-universal human instinct: draw what you mean. The same principle appears independently in Egypt, the Indus Valley, China, and Mesoamerica within a broad contemporaneous window. Writing, in its first form, is invented not once but several times — always to solve the same problem of tracking surplus in a complex society.

The Standard of Ur — writing and image in the same palace world
The Standard of Ur (British Museum) is not writing, but it depicts the same world writing was invented to administer: the palace banquet, the delivery of goods, the counting of livestock. Pictogram and administrative record are aspects of the same cognitive project. The palace is simultaneously the place where surplus is generated, where it is feasted upon, and where it is recorded. The very first literate societies are also the first monumental visual culture.

Pre-writing marking systems — the same impulse, no script
Potmarks, seal impressions, and incised symbols appear on pottery from the Aegean and the Cyclades from the late fourth millennium BCE. These are not writing — they record no sounds, words, or syntax — but they show the same administrative impulse that drives the invention of cuneiform: the need to mark ownership, origin, or quantity. The Aegean develops this marking tradition without developing a full script until c. 1,800 BCE. The question of why some cultures invent writing and others do not is itself a key course theme: complex society and long-distance trade can operate for centuries without literacy.

The rebus principle — the greatest cognitive leap in human history ★ Finkel
Pictograms have a hard limit: you can draw a sheep, a vessel, a loaf. But how do you draw “obligation,” “future,” or “because”? The solution is the rebus principle. In Sumerian, the word for arrow (ti) sounds the same as the word for life (ti). So scribes draw an arrow to mean “life.” A visual symbol now represents a sound rather than a thing. This is the moment a recording system becomes a writing system proper. Irving Finkel, British Museum curator of cuneiform, calls it “the only real giant leap man has ever made apart from the development of the electric guitar.” The comparison is characteristically Finkel, but the point is precise: the phonetic principle is the cognitive innovation from which all alphabets, syllabaries, and logographic systems ultimately descend. Writing is now capable, in principle, of recording anything that can be said.

Cuneiform as an imperial technology — many languages, one script
Once cuneiform can represent sounds, it can represent any language. The same system — wedge-shaped signs pressed into clay with a reed stylus — adapts to write Sumerian (the original), Akkadian (a Semitic language, the Latin of the ancient Near East), Elamite (Iran), Hurrian (northern Syria and Mesopotamia), Hittite (Anatolia, an Indo-European language), and Ugaritic (a Canaanite consonantal alphabet in cuneiform format). The range is not coincidental: cuneiform is adopted wherever palace administration requires it. Its difficulty is itself a mark of status: scribes invest years in training, and scribal schools are palace institutions. The script spreads as a technology of power, not as a convenience.

Ebla — 17,000 tablets and the multilingual palace archive
The royal archive of Ebla contains approximately 17,000 clay tablets in Sumerian and Eblaite (an early Semitic language), one of the largest single archive deposits in the ancient world. The tablets record trade, tribute, diplomatic correspondence, and — distinctively — bilingual vocabulary lists of Sumerian and Eblaite compiled as scribal training tools. The palace is a multilingual institution. The Ebla archive illustrates the central point: even three thousand years before the Greek alphabet, literate societies understand that writing is a tool for control, record-keeping, and negotiation. The literature comes much later.
2,800–1,500 BCE
c. 2,800–2,000 BCE · Aegean
Early Bronze Age Aegean — elite exchange without writing
While Mesopotamian scribes are writing cuneiform across the Near East, the Aegean conducts long-distance exchange of metal objects, fine pottery, and Cycladic marble figurines entirely without text. No record of any transaction survives because none was made. Absence of writing does not mean absence of complexity: the same societies build the Early Bronze Age palaces at Lerna and Kolonna and develop the Minoan palaces of Crete. Writing is a choice, not an inevitable step, and the choice not to write — or not yet to write — has consequences for what survives and what can be known.
Course theme: Writing is invented for control, not expression The phonetic leap makes writing capable of recording language, but that capability is not immediately used for literature or philosophy. For its first thousand years, cuneiform remains almost entirely administrative: rations, livestock, loans, tribute. The earliest versions of the Epic of Gilgamesh appear c. 2,100 BCE — twelve centuries after the Uruk beer-ration tablet. Writing and literary culture are not the same thing and do not arrive together.

Global context. The move to alphabetic writing is not the inevitable destiny of all script systems. Egyptian hieroglyphic survives for 3,500 years without alphabetisation. Chinese character-based writing (first attested on Shang dynasty oracle bones, c. 1,200 BCE) remains in continuous use to the present day. The Greek alphabet is a specific, historically contingent solution to a specific phonological and commercial problem, not a universal progress narrative. Most of the world’s writing traditions choose a different path.
c. 3,100 BCE onwards · Egypt
Egyptian hieroglyphic — the most complex writing system ever developed
Egyptian hieroglyphic (from c. 3,100 BCE, contemporaneous with proto-cuneiform) combines pictographic, phonetic, and logographic elements in the same script. A single sign can function as a picture, as a sound sign, or as a category determinative. The system contains over 700 signs in the classical period and requires years to master. Hieratic (a cursive scribal form on papyrus) develops alongside it for everyday use. Demotic (a still-simpler cursive) emerges c. 650 BCE as the script of legal documents, contracts, and personal letters. Egypt’s response to the problem of script accessibility is to develop parallel systems at different complexity levels rather than alphabetise — a fundamentally different strategy from the Phoenician and Greek solution. The Rosetta Stone (196 BCE), bearing the same priestly decree in hieroglyphic, demotic, and Greek, makes decipherment possible in 1822.
c. 2,600–1,900 BCE · Indus Valley
Harappan script — undeciphered and a permanent question mark undeciphered
The cities of the Indus Valley civilisation (Mohenjo-daro, Harappa) use a script of approximately 400 signs, attested primarily on small clay seals used in trade contexts. The Harappan script has never been deciphered. The underlying language is unknown; the script disappears with the Indus urban collapse c. 1,900 BCE and left no descendants. It is the largest undeciphered script corpus in the world. Its trade-context use suggests that, like proto-cuneiform, it was an administrative and commercial tool. What we would know about the ancient world if it were readable is one of the great unanswerable questions of archaeology — and a useful reminder that the survival of a writing system depends on the survival of the institutions that maintained it.

Cuneiform spreads from its Sumerian heartland (Uruk, Nippur) outward through Akkadian imperial administration, reaching Syrian palace cities (Ebla, Ugarit), Hittite Anatolia (Hattuşa), and Elamite Iran (Susa). The system adapts to six or more distinct languages while retaining the same clay-and-reed technology. Scribal schools at peripheral palace states invest heavily in cuneiform training as a mark of participation in the international order.

The Ugaritic alphabet — why create an alphabet at all?
Ugarit’s scribes adapt the alphabetic principle (one sign per consonant) to the cuneiform tablet format, producing a 30-sign cuneiform alphabet alongside the standard hundreds-of-signs cuneiform system. The two scripts coexist at the same scribal school. The probable driver: Ugaritic merchants needed a script learnable in weeks, not the years required for full cuneiform literacy. The alphabet is a commercial shorthand for a society that trades with too many languages and too many partners to rely on a small scribal elite. The same scribal school that produced the Ugaritic alphabet also produced the Baal Cycle mythology — the commercial and the literary meet at the same institution. This is treated in depth in the course trade and exchange discussions.

Linear A — the Minoan script we cannot read undeciphered
Linear A is the writing system of Minoan Crete, attested on clay tablets at Knossos, Phaistos, Hagia Triada, and Akrotiri (Santorini). Approximately 1,500 inscriptions survive. The script is syllabic — each sign represents a syllable — and appears almost entirely on administrative tablets recording agricultural produce and inventories. The underlying language is unknown and unrelated to any identified language family. When the Mycenaeans take over Knossos c. 1,450 BCE, they adapt Linear A to write Greek, producing Linear B. This means Linear A’s signs are now readable as sounds, but the language those sounds represent remains entirely opaque.

The Phaistos Disk — archaeology’s most famous unsolved problem undeciphered
The Phaistos Disk is a fired clay disk bearing 241 signs stamped in spiral sequences on both faces. It is unique: no other example of its script has ever been found. Current scholarly opinion is genuinely cautious — it may not be Minoan at all, but an import from elsewhere in the Aegean or Anatolia. The signs appear syllabic, but with no bilingual parallel and no related texts, decipherment is essentially impossible. Students should be sceptical of online “decipherments”; none has achieved any scholarly consensus. Its value for this course is not its content (unreadable) but what it illustrates about the conditions required for successful decipherment.

Cypro-Minoan — Cyprus’s own undeciphered script undeciphered
Arthur Evans coined the name “Cypro-Minoan” in 1909 for a Cypriot script he thought looked like Linear A — and descent from Linear A remains the leading theory. Around 250 inscribed objects survive: clay tablets, cylinders, balls, and marks scratched onto pottery, concentrated at Enkomi, Kition, and Kalavasos-Ayios Dimitrios on Cyprus itself, but also turning up at Ugarit on the Syrian coast and as a single stray piece at Tiryns on the Greek mainland. Like Linear A and Linear B, it is a syllabary; estimates of its sign inventory range from the high fifties to the mid-nineties depending on how its variants are classified. The language or languages it records are unknown — Cypriot, Semitic, and other candidates have all been proposed for different find-groups, and Thomas Palaima, one of the field’s leading epigraphists, has called every decipherment attempted so far improbable. What is reasonably well accepted is what came after it: the alphabetic-era Cypriot Syllabary, in use from the eleventh century BCE onward, descends from Cypro-Minoan by a route still only partly understood — and it is that later syllabary, not this one, that spells a word of Greek on a bronze spit at Palaepaphos (see “Cyprus doesn’t go dark” below).

Linear A appears across the Minoan sphere — Crete and the southern Aegean islands, including Akrotiri/Thera. Cypro-Minoan, some 800km to the east, is probably descended from it but records an unrelated, unidentified language. The Phaistos Disk, found at just one site with no related text anywhere, may not belong to either tradition.

Linear B — Greek Bureaucracy Without Greek Literature c. 1,450 – 1,200 BCE

The Amarna Letters — how a Great King’s court actually corresponded
Roughly 380 cuneiform tablets recovered from Akhenaten’s short-lived capital preserve the diplomatic correspondence of the Egyptian court with the other Great Kings of the age — Babylon, Mitanni, Assyria, Hatti — and with Egypt’s own vassal rulers in Canaan and Syria. All of it, including Egypt’s own outgoing letters, is written in Akkadian cuneiform, the shared administrative language of Late Bronze Age diplomacy, regardless of what language any of these courts actually spoke at home. It is the clearest surviving picture of how a Great King’s court corresponded within Linear B’s own lifetime — and a measure of how little Linear B resembles it. No Mycenaean palace has produced anything like an Amarna archive, and, as the Prologue above notes, no cuneiform tablet of any kind has ever turned up at Pylos, Mycenae, or Knossos.

1930s–1952 · Brooklyn and London
Alice Kober, Michael Ventris, and a script with no bilingual
Linear B had no Rosetta Stone: no bilingual text, and no known descendant language to work back from. Alice Kober, a classicist at Brooklyn College, spent the 1940s cataloguing Linear B’s sign-groups by hand — some 180,000 index cards cut from scrap paper during the wartime shortage, plus forty notebooks — and used frequency analysis alone, with no knowledge of the underlying language, to identify what she called “bridging syllables” showing that the script encoded an inflected language with case-like word-endings. She died in 1950, at 43, with the work unfinished. Michael Ventris, an architect with no formal classical training, built directly on her method: working through his own grids of sign-combinations, he guessed in 1952 that a cluster of place-name-shaped words might be Cretan town names spelled out phonetically — and that the language beneath them, against a near-universal assumption that it could not be, was an early form of Greek. He announced the decipherment on BBC radio on 1 July 1952; John Chadwick, a Cambridge philologist who caught the broadcast, joined him within weeks to test and extend it. Ventris died in a car accident in September 1956, aged 34 — weeks before Documents in Mycenaean Greek, his and Chadwick’s joint edition of the tablets, was published.

A script built for the wrong language
Linear B is a syllabary of roughly 87 signs, some 60% of them inherited essentially unchanged from Linear A — which is exactly why Linear A’s signs can be read aloud even though the language behind them cannot; Ventris and Chadwick’s decipherment supplied the sounds, not the meaning. Every sign is an open consonant-vowel syllable or a bare vowel, adapted to spell a language it was never designed for: Greek’s consonant clusters have to be split apart with an inserted vowel (tripous, ‘tripod,’ becomes ti-ri-po), word-final consonants are mostly dropped, and whole categories of Greek sound — the difference between p, b, and ph; between l and r — go unwritten entirely. A spelling like qa-si-re-u encodes a sound, the labiovelar *gw, that had vanished from Greek by the Classical period, spelled with a whole row of signs (qa qe qi qo) that later Greek dialects would each break apart differently into p-, t-, or k- sounds depending on the vowel that followed. Working the spelling rules by hand is the fastest way to feel why the decipherment took as long as it did.

The tripod tablet — proof, not just plausibility
The clearest evidence that Ventris was right came from an inventory of vessels at Pylos. Its scribe drew each cauldron with an ideogram showing exactly how many handles it had, then wrote out, in Ventris’s proposed Greek reading, words that said the same thing in language: ti-ri-po and ti-ri-po-de read straightforwardly as tripos and tripodes, “tripod(s)” — the same word Greek would use three thousand years later. Beside four-handled vessels the text reads qe-to-ro-we, “four-eared”; beside three-handled ones, ti-ri-o-we, “three-eared”; beside one with no handles at all, a-no-we, “without ears.” Picture and description agreed, detail for detail, on facts no one could have reverse-engineered a decipherment to fit. Carl Blegen, the excavator of Pylos, put it to Ventris directly: “all this seems too good to be true. Is coincidence excluded?” It was. Within two years, most Anglophone scholars had accepted that Linear B recorded Greek.

Rations, not literature — what the palace bureaucracy actually recorded
The roughly six thousand surviving Linear B tablets record wool allocations, grain rations, shepherd counts, rower lists, and palace inventories — nothing else. They use Greek but produce nothing we recognise as Greek culture: no myth, no poetry, no law, no philosophy. The Mycenaean palace economy uses literacy as a control technology and nothing more. When the palaces collapse c. 1,200 BCE, Linear B vanishes with them: no one outside the palace scribal bureaucracy could read it, and no one needed to. The collapse of a writing system and the collapse of the institution that maintained it are the same event.

Linear B tablets survive only where a palace burned: fire baked clay that would otherwise have dissolved back into mud. Knossos yields the earliest archive, from the period of Mycenaean control over Crete, significantly earlier than the mainland material. The mainland palaces — Pylos, Mycenae, Thebes, Tiryns — burn at the end of the Bronze Age and each preserve a single administrative snapshot from their final months or years.

The Bronze Age Collapse is also a Literacy Collapse (c. 1,200–1,100 BCE)
When the palace network collapses, the scribal schools collapse with it. Linear B vanishes without a successor. Ugaritic cuneiform disappears. The entire interconnected world of multilingual scribal literacy — a thousand years in the making — is gone within a generation. The Greek world enters a period of complete illiteracy lasting approximately four centuries. What this means for the transmission of myth, the composition of epic, and the conditions in which the Greek alphabet is subsequently invented are central questions. Writing can be lost. Literacy is not an irreversible achievement.
After the Collapse — Phoenician and the Alphabetic Revolution c. 1,100 – 800 BCE

The Phoenician alphabet — 22 consonants, no palace required
The Phoenician alphabet descends from Proto-Sinaitic script (c. 1,900 BCE), which itself simplifies Egyptian hieroglyphic signs into consonant-only symbols. The result is 22 signs, no vowels, learnable in days. It is a merchant’s script for a post-palace world in which no state scribal institution exists to train cuneiform specialists. Phoenician merchants carry it across the Mediterranean alongside cedar timber and purple dye. It has no vowels because Semitic languages are root-based: consonants carry the meaning; vowels are grammatical inflections that a native speaker supplies automatically. The Phoenician consonantal script works perfectly for Semitic phonology. It will need modification for Greek.
c. 900–600 BCE · Near East and Levant
Aramaic — the alphabetic lingua franca of the Near East
By 800 BCE, Aramaic written in an alphabetic script derived from Phoenician is displacing Akkadian cuneiform as the administrative language of the Near East. The Assyrian and then Persian empires both use Aramaic for international correspondence. It remains the everyday spoken and written language of the Levant and Mesopotamia for over a thousand years. It is the language Jesus speaks. The Aramaic script is the ancestor of Hebrew square script, Arabic, and eventually many scripts of the Indian subcontinent. The alphabetic principle, once released from its Ugaritic and Phoenician origins, produces a family of scripts across a vast area at a speed cuneiform never achieved.
c. 650 BCE onwards · Egypt
Demotic Egyptian — a parallel response to the same pressure
Egypt’s answer to the growing need for accessible literacy is demotic: a highly cursive, simplified script derived from hieratic. Demotic is not alphabetic — it retains the multi-valent logic of Egyptian writing — but it is dramatically faster to write and easier to learn than hieroglyphic. It becomes the script of everyday legal documents, business contracts, and personal letters. The comparison with Phoenician is instructive: both emerge c. 700–600 BCE as responses to broader social literacy needs, but represent fundamentally different solutions to the same problem. Egypt never abandons its logographic-phonetic tradition. The alphabetic world does not include Egypt.
1,100–800 BCE
c. 1,200–800 BCE · Greek world
The Greek Dark Ages — an oral culture remembering a literate world
Between the collapse of the Mycenaean palaces and the adoption of the Greek alphabet, the conventional view holds that the Greek world is completely illiterate for some four centuries: no writing survives. Whatever the truth of that gap (see the counterpoint below), the Iliad and Odyssey are composed and transmitted orally during this time, using a highly formalised system of verbal memory technology. The repeated epithets (“swift-footed Achilles,” “rosy-fingered dawn”), formulaic scene-types, and standardised speech patterns are not stylistic quirks but mnemonic devices: the oral epic tradition is a machine for storing narrative without text. The poems describe a world (the Bronze Age palace world of Mycenae) remembered by a society that has, at the very least, stopped writing it down on anything that survived.
c. 1,050 BCE · Tomb 49, Palaepaphos-Skales, Cyprus
Cyprus doesn’t go dark — “of Opheltas” ★ Waal
A grave holding roughly two hundred objects — bronze bowls, a tripod, weapons, three large bronze roasting spits (obeloi) belonging to a man entitled to preside over ritual feasting — includes one spit engraved with five signs: o-pe-le-ta-u, “of Opheltas.” The script is Cypro-Minoan, the Bronze Age Cypriot writing tradition; the genitive ending -au is ordinary Cypriot Greek. This is the earliest Greek writing known after the last Linear B tablets — one word, on one object, in a grave — and a warning against reading an archaeological gap as a literacy gap. Cypriot writing itself nearly disappears from the record after c. 950 BCE until the eighth century, yet the later Cypriot syllabary is close enough to Cypro-Minoan to show the tradition never actually broke.
Counterpoint — was there ever a real “Dark Age” of writing?
Willemijn Waal’s “Closing the Gap: Writing in the Aegean from the Late Bronze Age to the Iron Age” (2024) argues the conventional four-century blackout is largely an artefact of what survives, not of what happened. The roughly six thousand surviving Linear B tablets are almost all short-term administrative accounts, preserved only by accident when palace fires baked their clay; their “palm-leaf” shape likely imitates documents already being written on actual palm ribs or other perishable material, and the round, complex Linear B sign-forms are awkward for incising in clay but well suited to pen or stylus on a soft surface. Wooden diptychs survive from the Uluburun shipwreck, and bronze hinges at Pylos and Knossos may be the fittings of others like them — all physical traces of writing that has otherwise vanished entirely. If Linear B literacy was broader and less exclusively palatial than the surviving clay implies, the same logic applies on the other side of the gap: early alphabetic writing, too, “was also mainly recorded on perishable materials, and introduced much earlier than 800 BCE.” The Dark Age may be a gap in the evidence, not in the practice.
The Greek Alphabet — Vowels, Homer, and the Oral-to-Written Transition c. 800 – 650 BCE
c. 825–750 BCE · al-Mina, northern Syria
Al-Mina — the contact zone where the alphabet reaches Greece
Al-Mina on the north Syrian coast is the trading post where Euboean Greek pottery appears from c. 825 BCE. It is the most probable site at which Greek traders encounter the Phoenician alphabet, along with the mythological traditions still circulating in the post-Ugaritic Levantine world. Robin Lane Fox’s argument that this is where Hesiod’s cosmogony was assembled is developed in the course mythology discussions. The key point here is geographical: the alphabet travels the same maritime trade routes as copper, timber, and purple dye. Commerce and writing technology are the same network.
800–650 BCE

The Greek alphabet — the crucial innovation is vowels
Greek adapts the Phoenician consonantal script with one crucial modification: it repurposes Phoenician consonant signs that have no equivalent in Greek phonology as vowel letters. The Phoenician aleph (a glottal stop, not used in Greek) becomes Greek alpha (the vowel A). The Phoenician he becomes Greek epsilon. The addition of vowels is not minor adjustment but conceptual transformation: it makes the script fully phonemic, capable of representing any sound in spoken Greek. And crucially for verse: you cannot scan hexameter without vowel notation. You cannot tell where a syllable is long or short. Whether this modification was made for commerce or for poetry is the central question of the following card.
c. 800–700 BCE
Powell’s thesis — the alphabet was adapted for Homer ★ key argument
Barry Powell argues in Homer and the Origin of the Greek Alphabet (Cambridge, 1991) that the Greek alphabet was adapted specifically to write hexameter poetry — probably the Homeric epics specifically. His evidence: (1) the earliest datable Greek alphabetic inscriptions are poetic, not commercial; (2) vowel notation is unnecessary for administration but essential for recording syllabic quantities in hexameter verse; (3) the Cup of Nestor (c. 735–720 BCE) is a hexameter inscription with a Homeric reference — the oldest secure evidence of the Greek alphabet in use. Powell’s specific “for Homer” formulation is his own, but the broader argument that the Greek alphabet was adapted for oral poetry builds on Eric Havelock’s earlier work on the oral tradition (Preface to Plato, 1963). The thesis is contested but enormously productive.

c. 735–720 BCE · Pithekoussai (Ischia), Gulf of Naples
The Cup of Nestor — earliest Greek alphabetic poetry
Found in 1954 in a child’s cremation grave at the Greek colony of Pithekoussai (Ischia, Italy), the Cup of Nestor is an ordinary clay drinking cup bearing a scratched three-line hexameter inscription: “I am Nestor’s cup, good to drink from. Whoever drinks this cup empty, straightaway desire for beautifully crowned Aphrodite will seize him.” The reference is to Nestor’s gold cup in Iliad XI — a Homeric treasure, compared here with humour to a cheap clay pot. Written in the Euboean alphabet, right to left. Its significance: within one generation of the alphabet’s probable adoption, a piece of cheap colonial pottery in a child’s grave bears a literary allusion scratched in hexameter. Whatever the alphabet was invented for, this is already one of its uses.

The Dipylon inscription — a dancing competition in hexameter
The Dipylon oinochoe (National Archaeological Museum, Athens) bears a 46-character inscription, written right to left in the Attic Greek alphabet, reading “He who now of all dancers performs most delicately” (the rest is lost). It is in hexameter, and it records or constitutes a sympotic competition prize. Not a commercial transaction. Not an administrative record. A game, a toast, a celebration. The alphabet arrives in the literary and social world of the symposium before it appears in any surviving commercial record — which is either evidence for Powell’s thesis, or evidence of what gets preserved in graves and what does not.

Methone — the find that complicates “poetry first”
A disused pit at the trading settlement of Methone has produced a substantial deposit of inscriptions, graffiti, and marks on pottery from roughly the same decades as the Cup of Nestor and the Dipylon jug. Some are metrical or playful — the so-called Cup of Hakesandros among them — but many more simply record ownership in the genitive, abbreviations, numerals, quantities, or the contents of a jar: a harbour where Greeks, Phoenicians, and their neighbours traded goods and writing habits together. Methone does not prove the alphabet was adopted for commerce before poetry. It does show that verse, ownership marks, dedications, and commercial notation are already sitting side by side within a generation of the earliest secure evidence — which is exactly why John Papadopoulos (2016) treats the Methone material as the find that makes the first leg of Powell’s argument — that the earliest inscriptions are poetic, not commercial — hard to sustain.

The Phoenician alphabetic script originates in the Levantine cities (Byblos, Tyre) and spreads westward through trade networks. The Greek adaptation, probably at the Euboean-Levantine contact zone near al-Mina, travels with Greek colonisation: the Euboean alphabet reaches Italy (Pithekoussai — Cup of Nestor) by c. 720 BCE. Local variants develop in different regions before standardisation in the classical period.

Course theme: The alphabet democratises literacy — but that is not why it was invented The Phoenician alphabet is a commercial shorthand. The Greek alphabet may have been adapted for poetry. Neither was invented as a democratic project. The democratic consequences — broader literacy, written law, civic participation, philosophical argument in published form — arrive one to two centuries later, as the tool is taken up by people outside the scribal and elite poetic classes. Technology and its social consequences do not arrive together.
Counterpoint — an earlier, quieter transmission? ★ Waal
Willemijn Waal (2024) argues the whole “alphabetic big bang” of c. 800 BCE may itself be a preservation effect, the same argument she makes for the Linear B gap. Three strands of evidence: (1) the earliest Greek inscriptions are unstable in writing direction — right to left, left to right, or boustrophedon — and some use word-dividers, both features closer to eleventh-century West Semitic scribal habits than to the fixed, right-to-left, continuously written Phoenician script actually in use by the ninth and eighth centuries. If the Greeks borrowed only in the eighth century, why copy conventions the Phoenicians themselves had already abandoned? (2) the roughly thirty-three distinguishable local Greek alphabets attested from the eighth century look less like a script that spread in one generation than one that had time to diverge regionally. (3) the closely related Phrygian alphabet is now dated to about 800 BCE at Gordion — independently contemporary with the earliest Greek evidence, which is hard to reconcile with a single, sudden transfer moment. On this reading, what changes visibly in the eighth century is not necessarily the existence of Greek alphabetic writing but its use on durable, public, personal materials — pottery and stone — for purposes, poetic and otherwise, that had previously left no trace.
Writing and the Transformation of Greek Thought c. 650 – 300 BCE
c. 600–400 BCE · Persian empire
Aramaic at empire scale — the Near Eastern parallel
While Greek philosophy and drama develop in alphabetically literate poleis, the Achaemenid Persian empire administers the largest territorial state the ancient world had yet seen using alphabetic Aramaic as its official written language. Royal inscriptions also appear in cuneiform (Old Persian) and in Egyptian hieroglyphic, depending on audience. The Persians demonstrate that alphabetic literacy can scale to imperial administration as effectively as cuneiform — but with a far broader potential literate population. An Aramaic scribe requires weeks to train, not years. The democratising effect of the alphabet on administrative life is visible across the Near East well before it becomes visible in Greek civic institutions.
650–300 BCE
c. 621–594 BCE · Athens
From dike to nomos — oral justice to written law
Customary justice (dike) is oral, remembered, interpreted by elders and aristocrats, and inherently unstable — it can be adjusted by those with social authority. Written law (nomos) is fixed, public, and arguable: anyone who can read it can challenge an aristocrat’s interpretation. Draco’s laws (621 BCE), the first Athenian written legal code, are famously severe. Solon’s reforms (594 BCE) replace most of them and inscribe the laws on wooden tablets (axones) set up in the Agora for public inspection. The alphabet is now a civic technology: law is no longer in the memory of the powerful, it is on a board in the marketplace. A brief note: the connection to the hoplite revolution and the conditions of participatory civic culture is developed further in the course discussion of the polis.

c. 600–500 BCE · Miletus and the Ionian coast
Written argument — the conditions for philosophy
Thales, Anaximander, and Anaximenes of Miletus produce written prose arguments about the natural world: what it is made of, how it works, why it changes. They argue without mythology, without divine authority, and in a form that can be read, disputed, and corrected. The connection to writing technology is structural: written argument is falsifiable in a way oral tradition is not. You can point to the text, identify the claim, and show it is wrong. The philosophical tradition is a tradition of written disagreement. Miletus is also the most prolific colonising city — the city that sent traders to the Black Sea and Egypt is also the city that produced the first philosophers. Commerce, writing, and philosophy arrive at the same place at the same time.
c. 525–406 BCE · Athens
Drama as a writing technology — the civic script
Greek tragedy and comedy require written scripts: the playwright is an author, and a chorus of fifteen must learn identical words. The Festival of Dionysus is a civic institution — attendance is a public duty, not entertainment in a modern sense — and the plays are written arguments about justice, piety, and the nature of the gods. Aeschylus (c. 525–456 BCE) is composing tragedies within two generations of the earliest secure alphabetic inscriptions. The speed with which the Greek alphabet moves from sympotic graffiti to civic drama is itself the argument: once literacy is broadly accessible, the range of things it can do expands faster than anyone anticipates.
c. 470–322 BCE · Athens
The Axial Age and the paradox of Socrates
Karl Jaspers coined “Axial Age” to describe c. 800–200 BCE, when rational and philosophical traditions emerge independently in Greece, India (the Upanishads, early Buddhism), China (Confucius, Laozi), and Persia (Zoroaster). The Greek case is distinctive in the specific role of writing: Greek philosophy is a tradition of texts from the beginning. The paradox is Socrates himself: the greatest philosopher of the period writes nothing. His method is oral and dialogic. Plato writes Socratic dialogues — and in the Phaedrus has Socrates argue that writing is inferior to speech, because text cannot answer back. The tradition’s most important critique of writing is preserved only because someone wrote it down.

Graffiti and ostraka — writing as civic life. The full democratisation of the alphabet is visible in what ordinary Athenians write. Athenian ostracism (from 487 BCE) uses potsherds — ostraka — as ballots: each citizen scratches a name, and the person with the most votes is exiled for ten years. The Athenian Agora excavations have recovered thousands of ostraka, many bearing the same few names in strikingly different hands — direct evidence of mass-participation writing. In a cuneiform world, only trained scribes can write; in the Greek alphabetic world, any citizen can scratch a name on a sherd and exercise democratic power. Graffiti on sympotic pottery from the archaic and classical periods shows the same breadth: the alphabet in Athens belongs to everyone who can hold a stylus.

Student Tasks

Two tasks, framed as alternatives rather than a set to work through in sequence — choose one and go deep. Task A follows the Wilusa/Ahhiyawa material from the Prologue above into what a Bronze Age warlord’s afterlife in Hittite diplomatic correspondence can, and cannot, tell us about the world behind Homer. Task B returns to Powell’s thesis on the origin of the Greek alphabet, now read against Willemijn Waal’s recent case that both the “Dark Age” and the “alphabetic big bang” may be effects of what survived rather than of what happened. As the course develops, tasks increasingly ask you to identify your own sources rather than relying on supplied links. AI tools such as Claude (claude.ai) and Microsoft Copilot (available free through the university’s Microsoft subscription) are useful starting points for locating peer-reviewed scholarship — but always verify what any AI tool tells you against the original source, and always prefer primary and peer-reviewed material over synthesis. The skills of source evaluation are themselves the point.

Stage 1 — Read (15 min)
Read the Tawagalawa Letter and Manapa-Tarhunta’s letter in the Prologue above. In your own words: what response is Hattusili actually trying to provoke by proposing the very words his Ahhiyawan “brother” should write back? What does that tell you about how much control a Hittite king could and could not exercise over Ahhiyawa?
Stage 2 — Reconstruct (15 min)
Using only the Prologue cards, map what we actually know about Piyamaradu: who he is, what he wants, and why neither king ever manages to catch him. Every account of him comes from a hostile source — Hittite kings or their vassals. What does the letters’ genre (diplomacy between “brother” kings) let us know about him, and what does it structurally prevent us from ever knowing?
Stage 3 — Test (15 min)
Examine the Luwian song fragment “When they came from steep Wilusa…” against the claim, sometimes made online and in popular accounts, that this is a lost “Wilusiad.” What exactly does the fragment contain? What would have to be true for it to count as evidence of a pre-Homeric Trojan War tradition, rather than a coincidence of vocabulary? Is the resemblance to Homer’s “steep Ilios” linguistic (the words are related) or only semantic (the words happen to mean similar things)?
3-minute report to class Share: (1) one sentence on who Piyamaradu was, according to the Hittite sources, and one sentence on why we should not fully trust that account; (2) the single strongest piece of evidence that a place called Wilusa mattered to more than one Bronze Age culture before Homer; (3) exactly what kind of claim the Luwian song fragment can, and cannot, support.
Stage 4 — Extended discussion (remaining time)

The identification of Wilusa with Troy and Ahhiyawa with the Mycenaean world is widely accepted but not beyond dispute. Consider together:

  • The identification question: the Wilusa–Troy link rests on a form (Wilušiya-) that is Luwian in the archive but need not tell us what language was actually spoken at the site — some scholars argue instead for a Tyrsenic language ancestral to Etruscan, and at least one recent article has questioned whether Wilusa is Troy at all. What kind of evidence would settle this definitively? Does the case for the Trojan War’s historical background depend on the identification holding?
  • Whose stories survive: we now know more about a Bronze Age Anatolian warlord’s movements than about any named Mycenaean Greek — because he happened to trouble a literate neighbour’s scribes. What does this tell us about whose voices survive from a partly illiterate society, and how should it change how we read the silence around Mycenaean Greek perspectives in this period?
  • The digamma argument: the case that Homeric metre requires “Wilios” shows the epic tradition preserves a very old linguistic layer. Does that prove the tradition reaches back to the Bronze Age Trojan War itself, or only that it reaches back to whenever digamma was still pronounced — which could be centuries later than any historical war, and still centuries before Homer? What is the difference between those two claims, and why does it matter?

This task connects the writing-technology argument to next week’s discussion of the Iliad itself: a war (if there was one) fought and lost in an illiterate Aegean, remembered by a culture that could not yet write, and eventually fixed in a script invented centuries after the war and the songs about it had both already circulated for generations.

Three-line hexameter inscription on a clay cup: “I am Nestor’s cup, good to drink from. Whoever drinks this cup empty, straightaway desire for beautifully crowned Aphrodite will seize him.” References Nestor’s gold cup in Iliad XI. A 2021 re-examination of the cremated bone found with it overturned the long-standing claim that it came from a child’s grave — the remains belong to at least three people, none demonstrably a child.

Read this chapter, not the 1991 monograph (one library hard copy only). It is a compressed restatement of the same book-length argument — the technical, chronological, and cultural case is unchanged: the earliest Greek alphabetic inscriptions are poetic, not commercial; vowel notation is unnecessary for administration but essential for hexameter scansion; the Cup of Nestor is the earliest secure evidence. The 1997 version does shift in one respect: it widens the target to include Hesiod alongside Homer, and quietly retreats from the monograph’s strongest claim that the alphabet was invented specifically and exclusively to record the Iliad and Odyssey.

Argues the “alphabetic big bang” of c. 800 BCE is best explained as a preservation effect: early Greek writing direction and word-dividers resemble eleventh-century West Semitic habits, not the fixed ninth–eighth-century Phoenician script; some thirty-three regional Greek alphabets imply longer, independent development; and the closely related, independently dated Phrygian alphabet (c. 800 BCE) is hard to reconcile with one sudden transfer. Stage 1 — Read (10 min)
Read the Cup of Nestor inscription and Powell’s argument in “Homer and Writing.” State his three-part case in your own words, as strongly and fairly as you can, before you try to challenge it.
Stage 2 — Counter (15 min)
Read the Waal counterargument above, together with the two “Counterpoint” panels in the timeline. Of Waal’s three strands of evidence — writing direction, regional diversity of local alphabets, the Phrygian parallel — which most directly undermines Powell’s specific claim that the alphabet was adapted for verse? Is there any part of Powell’s case that survives even if Waal is right about an earlier introduction date?
Stage 3 — Weigh (15 min)
The timeline (Era 6) describes the Methone material as the reason “the first of Powell’s three claims is now hard to sustain.” Explain specifically why: what did Methone actually produce, and what did the “earliest inscriptions are poetic” claim depend on that Methone now complicates?
3-minute report to class Share: (1) Powell’s case in two sentences; (2) the single Waal argument you find most damaging to it; (3) whether the “for Homer (and Hesiod)” causal claim can survive if Waal is right about an earlier, quieter transmission — and why.
Stage 4 — Extended discussion (remaining time)

Powell and Waal disagree about dates and mechanisms, but both are trying to explain the same silence. Consider together:

  • The 1991→1997 shift: Powell’s later chapter widens the target to include Hesiod and softens the “exclusively for the Iliad and Odyssey” claim. Is this a retreat under scholarly pressure, or simply a more careful statement of the same idea? What would you expect a confident thesis to do when challenged, versus a thesis in real trouble?
  • Havelock, Powell, and Waal together: Havelock’s larger claim (Preface to Plato) is that alphabetic literacy remade Greek cognition, independent of who invented the alphabet or why. Does Waal’s case for a longer, quieter transmission strengthen or weaken Havelock’s argument? Does it matter to Havelock whether literacy arrived suddenly or gradually?
  • What would falsify each thesis: Powell needs a securely dated, early commercial or administrative Greek alphabetic inscription predating the Cup of Nestor to lose his strongest evidence. Waal needs a securely dated Greek alphabetic document from the eleventh or tenth century BCE to move from “plausible reconstruction” to “established fact.” Neither exists yet. What kind of find would you predict for each, and where would you look for it?

This task sits at the intersection of the writing-technology argument and the broader course theme of how much confidence we should place in an argument from silence — the same problem this lecture raised for the Mycenaean “Dark Age” is now raised again for the alphabet’s own arrival.
